two views

i'm writing a paper right now for a class on the reality of Hell. we are asked to contrast and compare two of the major views, the traditional evangelical view which is basically a place of continual torment for the souls of those not taken into heaven to be with god. that includes satan and the demons as well.

the other view is called the annihilationist view. this was new to me, but it states that (this is very basic) for those who go to heaven there is an eternal life of unending fellowship with god, but for those who do not, they are judged and suffer and then are no more. they are just gone. the major theologian i'm reading on this topic is a guy named edward fudge who wrote the fire that consumes. (isbn 0-595-14342-3)

so i'm looking for some thoughts. both fudge and peterson (the guy i'm reading on the other side) make good and biblically sound points. it's a fascinating topic which has come up fleeting in many church discussions of late. the reality of hell is one that every person needs to deal with, so it's worth putting some thought into.
