the nice neighborhood

we are really enjoying our new neighborhood that we moved to in april. it has nice tree lined streets and mostly less chaos and crazy people. the interesting thing is that we had to move to the "nice" neighborhood in order to get robbed! yeah that's right, it happened again. i haven't ever posted here about this but some of my readers will recall that in the first 2 years of living in chicago, our car got broken into three times (the first being my first night ever in the city!). since then our lives have been pretty mellow, the neighbor in our last building got broken into and had her tv stolen but noone ever messed too much with us, but now that we've moved up to the good part of town it's happened again.

i was out riding bike on sat. morning and when i came home to put my bike in the storage locker, i found the basement door open and all the storage areas hanging wide open with broken locks and stuff strewn all over. as i gazed into our unit i noticed that my good bike (about $700) was missing, i thought "of course it is". so immediately i called the landlord and told him about the breakin. as i was waiting for him to show up i started looking around to find out if the guy was still around. i stuck my head into another storage area and there thrown on a pile of junk was my bike! awesome i thought, at least that wasn't taken. after dealing with the cops and fixing my lock i found out that i was missing a good drill, but nothing else seems to be gone.

later that day i found out that the guy whose locker my bike was in actually had about $3000 in sound equipment stolen (i don't know why he had such good stuff down there but i think it saved my bike). i think they would have taken my bike but when they hit that jackpot they just tossed it and ran.

i am thankful that it was only stuff but it still stinks to realize just how easily he got in. i'm hoping that he doesn't plan to make a return trip! anyway, just thought you might want to know that even the "nice" neighborhoods sometimes stink. ahhhh the joys of living in the city!

dude, that sucks. glad you found your bike but sorry it had to happen in the first place. gotta love the city... that's the price you pay, i guess. and think of it this way: if you live in a nice neighborhood, you likely have something worth taking. if you live in a not nice neighborhood, there's a reason you're there and you likely don't have anything worth taking. hmmm. note to self for any future moves! seriously though, sorry it happened to you, but glad your bike is safe.

yeah, it was a bummer of a realization but i'll put up with that anyday to be out of the ghetto. my spirit was just low and you could feel the oppression of that neighborhood all around you, like a physical weight of hopelessness. i'm glad we had the experience but it was time for a change.
