Sometimes it's hard to serve God with your whole life... other times it's a bit easier. With snow falling and about 40 degrees in the sun, heading to the Dominican Republic in just over a week doesn't sound like it's gonna be all that hard. This is my second trip down (you can see pix from my first trip here), and I'm more than a little excited to return again to the project that our church has been helping to spearhead for more than a decade now.
Colegio Moriah is a school for Hatian and Dominican children near the town of San Pedro de Macoris. This project includes not only the School but within the walls of the grounds there is also a church and home for the Pastor and his family. During our last trip down we worked primarily on the huge project of putting a roof on the second floor of the school, a huge undertaking. This time we're on another roof but this time it's the massive Church roof (currently under a temporary one). Along with this we'll be working extensively in the local neighborhoods (what we might consider slums), getting to know the kids and spending time with them. While our goal is physical the implications for both sides is a spiritual one. The completion of the church, which serves many functions in the community will allow them to have a place of refuge in storms and will continue to be a beacon of light in what otherwise is a pretty dark place.
This project is one of hope. Many of the Hatian refugees have absolutely nothing at all. Fleeing from horrible conditions to only slightly better miserable ones. While we go to minister in whatever way we can, we're often much more impacted for the trip. The church community there is currently fervently in prayer for our folks and if you're the praying type, I'd ask you to join them in lifting up this trip.
If you'd like more info or want to be involved in some way, please let me know. I'll post a couple pix here but hit up the links above for more if you would like. If you'd like to see my prayer letter for this trip I'll happily send you one if you send me your email address.
Much Love!
