once again the train provides me with another opportunity to think about something. today as i rode home i noticed a woman sitting a few seats away. she was probably in her late 20's or early 30's, well dressed and fairly average looking. this was all good and well, i probably wouldn't have even noticed her unless the nice young lady wouldn't have been sucking her thumb! what?!
now you must realize, i see many an interesting thing as i ride down the tracks but this one took me by surprise. what in the world was that? now i also understand that some people, because of earlier life events have some habits that are different but this just was a bit abnormal.
interestingly, while working with inner-city kids i've routinely seen 17-18 year olds sucking their thumbs but this woman was well beyond their age.
i guess i don't really have any major opinion or thoughts other than the fact that it was just wierd. i mean what do you say in that circumstance: pardon me miss but i couldn't help notice that you suck your thumb?!
i don't get it....

Hi Phil, Now you know one of the reasons Mom Rineer & I love to take trips on the train. It is always very interesting. We're praying about your ministry decision also... Looking forward to seeing you on graduation week-end, Love Dad R.
Phil, I know how she feels.
When I secretaried downstate, I was told to wear dress shoes. Of course at 18 yrs. old, dress shoes means 2-3 in. heals. You'd be walking merrily along and all of the sudden your foot stayed when you told it to go. It was very upsetting--there was your foot, doing its own thing. The rest of you was bound and determined to plug on and get to your desk before the queen secretary found out that you were late.
The cause, you ask? Why, of course, your heel on those beautiful shoes decided to explore the crack in the sidewalk. You never know what one might find in there--a nickel, penny, earring back, or maybe a cigarette butt or a wonderful piece of ABC gum, of course. Yes, all of those, but you know what that heel was looking for? A friend of course. How many other heels fled to that crack for comradery? There are dozens of them looking to share their stories of daily abuse in the workplace. Being the literal point through which all the daily stress poured out, they take a daily beating from the wearer of the shoes. Much pressure is released at that point--the very head of the victim or heel as it may be.
Anyway, it is a troubling moment when your heel decides to leave without you still attached. I hope you prayed for the woman who had to go through her day, lifting one foot normally and walking on tippy-toes with the other, hoping no one would notice her missing said heel.
